Background

Sustainable disposables sound like an oxymoron, but we live in a consumer culture where disposable products are ubiquitous. And they aren't going away anytime soon. EcoProducts see this as an incredible opportunity to help change the world — and more importantly, each of the local communities they serve — by making sustainable disposable products that shift an industry.

Outcome

The goal for this conceptual re-brand was to re-design EcoProducts assortment so that it reflects their core values and innovative spirit. To clearly communicate their position as one of the most credible sustainable companies to cater the foodservice — by actively to spreading awareness of ways that recycling and composting can benefit the environment.

Discovery

EcoProducts make single-use foodservice packaging from renewable resources and post-consumer recycled content. One of the biggest challenges we face is educating the public to why sustainable alternatives is worth the extra money.

Research concluded that the breakdown of materials made from fossil fuels is not the only problem we need to address. When food waste ends up at landfills it emits large amounts of methane gas which is more harmful to the environment than carbon-monoxide. Therefor the emphasis for this project have been placed on creating products from compostable materials made from renewable sources, and/or waste products from other industries.

Products also serve a dual purpose as secondary packaging. A thin layer of PLA film cover the openings so no dust or impurities get in contact with the part of the product that will hold food or beverages.

Materials

The materials used in this project are designed to decompose anywhere from 45-190 days in industrial composting facilities. This results in not only the proper disposal of the packages, but also the food waste itself. From the composting facility, new soil can be returned to the ground along with nutrients that fuel life.

Plates + Bowls (Wheatstaw)

This wheat straw products are made from a reclaimed resource. The unique biopulping process ensures these beefy powerhouses of the take-out world can go the distance with whatever chow you throw their way.

  • Our wheat straw products are compostable in commercial compost facilities, but unfortunately not in your home compost.

  • Compost is a great way to improve vital soil resources and divert waste that would otherwise be landfilled.

Bowl Lids (Sugarcane)

This material is a great alternative to traditional plastic or polystyrene. Sugarcane fiber products are BPI certified compostable and made from a 100% reclaimed and renewable material.

Unlike traditional hot cup lids, the Renewable&Compostable EcoLid® is made with PLA, a plant-based material, instead of traditional oil-based plastics. The EcoLid® is specially designed to top off hot beverages and prevent leaking. 100% renewable, BPI certified compostable and ASTM compliant. Heat tolerance of 200° F.
